چکیده

In order that it may be built within a reasonable length and with reasonable ac power consumption, a 5 TeV linear collider must employ an accelerating gradient and rf frequency which are both higher than for present 1 TeV collider designs. The required rf power per meter, which will also be higher than for 1 TeV designs, can be provided either by relatively conventional rf technology or by a two-beam scheme such as that proposed for CLIC. In this paper the first alternative, a 30 GHz rf system employing microwave tube power: sources together with rf pulse compression, is described which produces an accelerating gradient on the order of 200 MV per meter. Limitations on the peak power that can be obtained from conventional Hystrons as a function of frequency are discussed; it is found mat such klystrons are only marginally adequate as a power source at 30 GHz. Several alternative rf sources, such as multiple-beam klystrons, sheet-beam klystrons, gyro~ystrons and annular-beam ubitrons are described which are capable of providing the required power, after pulse compression, of about 600 MW per meter. Presented at the 17th IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference (PAC 97): Accelerator Science, Technology and Applications, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, May 12-16,1997.

Prospects for Multi-tev Two-beam Linear Colliders*

Recent work at CERN and SLAC has opened the possibility of the development of concrete designs for electron positron linear colliders that have a center of mass energy substantially above 1 TeV [1,2]. These designs are based on high gradient, normal conducting acceleration with the power provided by an auxiliary beam that is efficiently accelerated in a fully loaded, low frequency linac. This t...

Research and Development for an X-band Linear Collider*

At SLAC and KEK research is advancing toward a design for an electron-positron linear collider based on X-Band (11.4 GHz) rf accelerator technology. The nominal acceleration gradient in its main linacs will be about four times that in the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC). The design targets a 1.0 TeV center-of-mass energy but envisions initial operation at 0.5 TeV and allows for expansion to 1.5 ...

RD on Multi-TeV Linear Collider, Status and Perspectives

A high luminosity (1034 1035 cm2/s) electron-positron Collider (CLIC) with a nominal centreof-mass energy of 3 TeV has been under study for a number of years in the framework of an international collaboration of laboratories and institutes, with the aim to provide the HEP community with a new facility for the post-LHC era. After a brief description of a CLIC scheme to extend Linear Colliders in...

The Development of the next Linear Collider at Slac*

At SLAC, we are pursuing the design of a Next Linear Collider (NLC) which would begin with a center-of-mass energy of 0.5 TeV and be upgradable to at least 1.0 TeV, and possibly 1.5 TeV. The luminosity is designed to be 1O33 cmS2s-l at the lower energy and 1O34 cm-2s-1 at the top energy. In this paper, we discuss the accelerator physics issues which are important in our approach, and also the p...
